Subject: Interview with Marathon Legend Joan Benoit Samuelson

Hello,

In April, during Olympic Trials, Joan Benoit Samuelson added another record to her collection.  At age 51, Joan set the U.S. record for the 50-54 age group for the Women's Marathon.

And while it would take me a whole email to list Joan's accomplishments, some of the highlights include being the first woman to win the inaugural marathon in the 1984 Olympics, winning the Boston Marathon twice, Chicago Marathon and Columbus Marathon.  She has held multiple World Records as well as numerous U.S. records and has been inducted into several hall of fames.

No stranger to injuries, one of her most remarkable feats was winning her Olympic berth for the 1984 Olympics just 2 ½ weeks after having knee surgery.

When she's not running, she's a mother of two, a Nike consultant and clinician, and frequently speaks on running, health and fitness.

Some of the take a-ways I hope you will get from observing her life are:
  • It is possible to work, raise a family and keep up a very active lifestyle
  • As you age, you can continue to set records and personal bests
  • Don't let injuries defeat you
This week I have a real treat for you. After playing phone tag with Joan for the past several weeks, I've finished up my interview with her and have posted it on my forum.  Joan answers the following during our interview:
  • How to change your training as you age to avoid injury and stay healthy
  • Which Health Care Team members Joan uses on a regular basis
  • What she feels is the most important way to get healthier
  • How to have a healthier lifestyle
  • Her secret to getting the biggest benefit out of the activities in your life

Learn Joan's answers to these and more at http://www.mikeryanfitness.com/forum.php .  There you will find a unique interview with information aimed at Baby Boomer Athletes.  Enjoy!

With Healthy Regards,

Mike Ryan PT, ATC, PES
