Hello,
This month in Reader's Digest,
there is an article called, "Yes You Can find your inner Olympian and get
fit at any age."
The article tells the story of 7 "ordinary" people
who took the plunge, how they did it and why.
- Jane and Jean Diaz, age 47, decided to try triathlons. Reason: to
stay healthy.
- Judy Moerlin, age 77, started the Hillside Hike Bikers group.
Her reason: to stay connected.
- Jim Hammond, age 94, started sprinting at age 86 and now competes.
His reason: to get the glory.
- Beckie Page, age 53, plays beach volleyball as well as running,
rollerblading, cycling and rock climbing. Reason: to save her
life.
- Rex Patton, age 57, took up surfing. Reason: to be creative.
- And Barry Erbsen, age 67, ran marathons for 20 years. Now he
mountain bikes. Reason: to go fast.
Inspiration...proof
that you can do it...new ideas and affirmation that running, biking and
swimming aren't your only options...additional reasons as to why you
should stick with your fitness goals...and it's not too late...all come to
mind when reading these stories.
My advice this week is to take
away more than inspiration though. Take a look at what you see in
common with "how they did it"; advice I've given in my Q & A and Forum
(http://www.mikeryanfitness.com/forum.php); and some of
the things the veteran Olympians like Dara Torres, Sheila Taormina and
Jason Lezak say about the differences in their training now verses when
they were younger.
Things like:
- Work on your Core
- Work on your flexibility and balance
- Work with your Health Care Team to achieve YOUR goals
- Consider adding massage techniques
What other commonalities
will you discover when you start looking?! Lots I'm sure.
Will these tips help all of you weekend warriors?
Absolutely! Yep, even the massage part.
Speaking of which,
tune into my massage tips and suggested relief solutions for Candy who has
problems with plantar fasciitis. You can read all about it here: http://www.mikeryanfitness.com/faq.php
