Who is Mike Ryan?

Mike is a husband, a triathlete, licensed Head Athletic Trainer for the Jacksonville Jaguars, a registered Physical Therapist, a certified Performance Enhancement Specialist, a Guest Lecturer, a Blogger, Member of several Elite Sports Medicine Committees, Winner of many awards including the 2008 Southeast Athletic Trainers Association Professional Athletic Trainer of the Year Award and a Published Author having published more than 40 articles.

Mike will tell you his first competition was in 1963 when he battled it out with his twin brother for more leg room. From then on he began his lifelong love of exercise.

In the spring of 1978, his oldest brother, Jim, convinced Mike to go out for the track team to improve his speed for football, his first love. He ran his first track meet in junior high in 1978 at Mohawk Trail High School in Massachusetts. This began Mike’s fascination with competing.

Today, Mike is an accomplished athlete, competing in Ironman Triathlons, Marathons and Triathlons all over the world. Just a brief listing includes completing 5 Ironman Triathlons, close to 50 Triathlons (ranging from the full 140 mile Ironman to sprint distances), running the Empire State Building Run-up 4 times, participating on Team USA for Duathlon World Championships, running the Boston Marathon, approximately 40 road races and Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, twice, for good measure.

While Mike has accomplished a lot in his athletic career, he will be the first to admit it isn’t always easy. He competed in his first duathlon when he was 23 years old in Connecticut finishing second to last!

But it is his stick-to-it-ness and goal-setting which have kept Mike on track throughout his Athletic and Professional career. Mike knew back in high school he wanted to work for the National Football League. Having always loved sports and science, he credits his kind and caring guidance counselor, Ms. Garafellow, with introducing him to various careers involving these two fields of interest. Ms. “G” as Mike calls her, really caught his interest when she showed him information on the field of Athletic Training. She ordered him literature and spoke to his football coaches, who, in turn continued to mentor him on what they knew about this field. Mike still remembers the day he raced home during his sophomore year of high school to tell his mom he was going to be an athletic trainer in the National Football League.

Fast forward 10 years, and Mike made that dream a reality, becoming one of the youngest people to ever be named Head Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist in the National Football League. And for the past 20 years, Mike has worked as a registered Physical Therapist and a licensed Athletic Trainer for the New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He continues his education by spearheading and participating in numerous committees and programs related to the Sports Medicine Physical Therapy field.

Today Mike spends his time as Head Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist for the Jacksonville Jaguars and as a physical therapy volunteer passionate about helping Baby Boomers stay active by better utilizing their Health Care Team.

Mike uses his experiences, both professionally and personally, to help athletes prevent athletic injuries as well as providing rehabilitative consultation when they have been injured. These experiences have taught Mike what it takes to keep elite athletes healthy at a very high level. Now through speaking engagements and this Web site, he is applying his signature methods which he calls the, “MRF PREHAB SYSTEM”, to the Baby Boomer generation.

His exercises and principles are quick, easy and effective whether you are currently active or wishing you could return to the level of activity you once enjoyed. Mike believes these methods combined with the knowledge of how to more effectively communicate with your Health Care Team help you to find yourself not only maintaining your health, but improving it. He is living proof it can be done.

Sports Medicine Physical Therapist and Athletic Trainer, Mike Ryan answers your personal questions...

Doug T. - I love your sports medicine info and I'm excited to see the new changes. I'm trying to get back in shape for the summer and I'm having ongoing knee pain that never seems to go away. The pain is mostly below my kneecap and it hurts when I move my knee after sitting for a prolonged period of time in a movie or on a plane. I'm 42 years old but this is making me feel like I'm 80 years old! What can I do?? Thanks for your help.
