Title: Just Move! - Avoiding the Quest for the Perfect Workout
Date: 08-06-2008
Let’s face it; we all need to be motivated now and then to do the things we know we should do. Improving our health is commonly one of those issues. Procrastinating about wellness seems to be almost expected in today’s society. That has to change.
Can you think of three other factors in our lives more important than our health? So why do we put our health so far down on our priority list?
Here is your solution:
1. Just Move!
2. Stop waiting for the perfect workout
Sure, you need to eat better and you need to watch your weight and keep your cholesterol numbers from competing with the Dow Jones. But moving more and, initially, doing less strategic planning for the perfect workout is the key. If you are looking for the one personal trainer that will show you how to burn off last weekend’s BBQ in a 12 minute workout, you are dreaming.
The Moving Machine
The human body was made to move. It has the ability to carry itself and all it’s belongings to the top of the earth, through the hottest deserts and over the coldest glaciers known to man. Generally speaking, it can surely handle a 30 minute walk/run on the treadmill in an air conditioned gym or a bike ride around your neighborhood!
Think about it: You are probably not in the best shape of your life right now but you will never be this young ever again. You can do something today and tomorrow and the next day to reduce your body fat, to improve your endurance, to enhance your appearance and to supercharge your self esteem but you cannot do anything to get younger!
There is No Such Thing as the Perfect Workout
There, I said it, so stop looking for it. How many of you reading this article have been looking for “just the right workout” or the new piece of equipment that will really get you excited to get back into shape? Face the facts: You are being lazy and you are a victim of the big marketing/infomercial machine! It is millions of people with that attitude that spend hundreds of millions of dollars per year buying fitness items that simply collect dust in their homes.
Do you ever see a yacht anchored in the harbor with its entire crew navigating the exact direction to leave the port to reach its destination? No, because that kind of specific detail and effort is a waste of time that early on…no matter how far the trip.
The crew of that yacht will utilize it’s time early on getting the boat moving out of the harbor and getting the wind in its sails. Only after momentum has been gained and the minor problems with the gauges and ropes have been corrected will the boat’s crew focus on detailed directions.
Is your fitness and health boat riding high on the open seas of life or are you anchored in the harbor procrastinating with details that will be meaningless when your body has given up on you?
That last statement may sound cruel. But I know if you are reading my Web site you know that I am direct and honest in my communication to help anyone who is tired of being treated like they are 90 years old and frustrated with being “average”.
The bottom line is to challenge yourself every day by getting out of the chair or off the sofa and move…period. Earl Nightingale said it best when he summarized his studies with the term: “You become what you think about”. If you think of yourself as a young, healthy and active, your body and mind will work together to become that person. It will take time and it all starts with you moving in that direction.
